Mahogany Brain Challenge (MBC)

The goal of MBC is to provide an educational activity during Black history month in the form of an African-American history quiz competition for youth from 3rd to 8th grade to learn about the historical experiences and contributions made by African-Americans. The purpose of this competition is to strengthen team building skills and promotes a positive attitude toward racial identity.

Reading Programs The purpose of this program is to utilize reading and a means to educate children on what it means to live a healthier, more natural and environmentally safe lifestyle through reading. Children will be inspired to think green by thinking about the world, their relationship to it, and their ability to influence Reading tutorial sessions will be provided to at risk youth in the community and activities will be planned that will enhance the reading skills of inner city youth.

Scholarships The implementation of a scholarship program, including establishing the criteria of scholarship applicants, selection of scholarship recipients, monitoring of the recipients’ continued eligibility for participation in the program and mentoring recipients.

Alpha Tau Omega Undergraduate Scholarship

Alpha Tau Omega annually awards $10,000.00 in scholarships to college bound seniors and students eligible for renewals. Scholarships applications are a mailed to area school districts in the San Antonio and Bexar County Communities.

In addition to the scholarships offered by Alpha Tau Omega Chapter, the San Antonio Ivy Educational Fund Inc. also offers non-traditional scholarships to St. Philips students who are returning college students to encourage them to finish their college education.

St. Philips College Scholarship

The San Antonio Ivy Educational Fund, Inc. and the Alamo Colleges Foundation award an annual scholarship which provides financial assistance for students enrolled at St. Philip’s College. In order to receive the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

CRITERIA

1. Enroll at St. Philip’s College as a full-time student (minimum 12 hours)

2. Enroll in a degree or certificate program

3. Complete at least 12 hours of relevant technical courses with a minimum 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale

4. Demonstrate financial need for the award period with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) under $1,000.00

5. Complete the Alamo Colleges Common Scholarship Application and meet eligibility requirements set by St. Philip’s College and the Alamo Colleges

6. Be identified on official government documents as African American

7. Be a female or male head of household with documented financial responsibility for at least one dependent

SELECTION

Selection of award recipient(s) will be made by a scholarship committee comprised of objective individuals who may include faculty, staff, and/or community members. A report is sent to the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Ivy Educational Fund, Inc. with name(s) of the student(s) who meet the above criteria for confirmation and acceptance.

AWARD

Award up to four (4) scholarships. The award can be used for tuition, fees, books, or other educational expenses. The award will be applied to the student’s account.
